Lightning- Potentiator of the Spirit Explored

Posted on April 9, 2011

“…each mind/body/spirit complex shall and should and, indeed, must perceive each archetype, if you use this convenient term, in its own way. Therefore, you may see that precision is not the goal; rather the quality of general concept complex perception is the goal.”- Ra, Session 77

Arcanum 16

Lighting: abrupt electric discharge from cloud to cloud or from cloud to earth accompanied by the emission of light

Strike: have an emotional or cognitive impact upon or hit against; come into sudden contact with.

Tower: a structure taller than its diameter; can stand alone

Inspiration: a sudden intuition as part of solving a problem. Divine Guidance.

“The potential power of this extremely receptive matrix is such that the potentiator may be seen as Lightning. In your archetypical system called thetarot this has been refined into the concept complex of the Lightning Struck Tower. However, the original potentiator was light in its sudden and fiery form; that is, the lightning itself.” -Ra, Session 78

What is the potentiator of the spirit?

“… one may see the Matrix as the deepest darkness and the Potentiatorof Spirit as the most sudden awakening, illuminating, and generative influence.” -Ra, Session 79

What do we know about lightning?

If you were a child of the 80’s, when I say “Johnny 5 is alive”, you might know what I am talking about. Johnny 5 is from a little movie called Short Circuit, the unlikely story of a military robot who, after being struck by lightning, becomes self-aware and travels on an an amusing adventure of self-discovery that would even get him a second movie out of the deal.  Or Powder, about a boy who’s mom was struck by lightning at birth endowing him with the burden or gift of superior intellect, unusual electromagnetic ablities along with unwanted physical side-effects of the strike, like absence of hair on the body and pigmentation in the skin. There are hundreds of examples of Earth man’s theories about the wonder of the phenomena we call lightning. Remember Highlander?

Couple those main stream ideas with those of a more esoteric crowed and you will start to hear words like power, grounding, focused energy, unbridled and violent energetic force.

Lightning is an atmospheric discharge of electricity accompanied by thunder, which typically occurs during thunderstorms, and sometimes during volcanic eruptions or dust storms. In the atmospheric electrical discharge, a leader of a bolt of lightning can travel at speeds of 220,000 km/h (140,000 mph), and can reach temperatures approaching 30,000 °C (54,000 °F), hot enough to fuse silica sand into glass channels known as fulgurites which are normally hollow and can extend some distance into the ground. There are some 16 million lightning storms in the world every year.–

The immediacy of inspiration is like being struck by lighting. It all comes in a rush, a download of information in a flash. It very well might shake you’re whole world up. You may feel like everything is up in the air; true upheaval. My mom calls it “free falling”, like the Tom Petty song of the same name. There is a need to let go of old paradigms to integrate new information. This letting go can sometimes be observed as destruction and loss, when it is the Spirit clearing the way for the fresh new energy to take root.

Practical Concepts

Sometimes it takes a great shock to wake us up and drive us back within. The main figure has been transformed into a pyramid, the symbol of the road back to oneness. This is an inward road; introspection is key. Upheaval in the physical world will sometimes force us to examine ourselves from a more mortal perspective. Everything that seemed so solid, permanent suddenly seems fragile, temporary and transient. There is a need to move away from old ideas and embrace new ones, but also the need to respect and honor the lessons that we have learned so far. Radical ideas and new fresh energy can be a destructive force to old paradigms and belief structures that for whatever reason are no longer valid, useful or are torn apart and ripped open so that even more truth of the mystery can be revealed.

The two falling men, either one are affected equally by this force. Notice they both point inside the pyramid to the tri-level interior. I suspect these are the levels of the mind, body, spirit complex and how the beliefs that are being challenged by the brute force of the the lightning likely are centered in one or all of the three. On a more general note, the idea that there are many layers within the heart of any given structure seems apparent.

One might question where these two men where before the bolt struck the structure. They are both obviously outside and in front of it, just on either side. So too, we are separate from the structures and ideas that we create in our mind, thought forms that we use to explain or condense or summarize our experiences.

Sraddhalu Ranade, has a grounded and scientific approach to understanding the cosmos and the royal road of man. Listen to how he describes many of the concepts covered in this card and many to follow.

Sraddhalu Ranade is a scientist, educator and scholar at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram where he grew up in the care of the late Sri M. P. Pandit. He is presently involved in the production of video programs based on India’s cultural roots, and conducts teacher-training programs based on a soul-centered approach to education. He has conducted numerous intensive teacher-training workshops on Integral and value-based education all over India. Over 4,500 teachers from more than 200 schools and colleges have benefited from these programs. He has been involved in various research projects including artificial intelligence based on neural networks, multimedia search and retrieval, and educational tools. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences on science and spirituality and lectures around the world on the yoga teachings of Sri Aurobindo.

Ideas: Why did the lightning strike?

Science will tell you that lightning is a result an electrical discharge that occurs. In other words, it is a build up of energy that needs to be released. Ra speaks about the idea that to find balance in ones mind, wherever one has a positive thought, one must find the corresponding negative thought to balance the charge. They used the example where ever you perceive patience, you must observe patience/impatience, or subtle recognition to both the observed phenomena and its opposite. I imagine if this balance isn’t achieved there could be a build up of energy that requires releasing.

What usually happens is you are going along about your business when something happens that in an instantly changes everything. Perhaps you read a disturbing email that your company will be laying you off at the end of the week or you wife or husband wants more space. Whatever it is for you, it feels like a kick in the kidneys. Your whole world is turned upside down. Everything you thought was right now seems horribly wrong and it happened so suddenly, like a flash and it’s all gone; all that’s left is the rubble of what once was.

It is reassuring to me that this sort of event in ones life is a face of the creator and yet another tool in the bag of tricks. Another path available to drive one again within to discover that which lies just beneath the surface itching to be discovered. One more reminder that we are not the forms or thoughts that we observe, we are not the structures that we have created, and no force is greater than the energy of nature of which we are each a part. This force can be seen as either life-providing or destructive, depending.

From an electrical charge perspective, is it possible that your thinking toward a certain situation was so heavily biased that one polarity of your mind became over-activated triggering a discharge, or a strong thought, that then creates the opportunity (event or experience) for the opposite to be considered by the mind suddenly and all at once. Notice that the foundation of the structure is not moved, only the top most point has been defaced. Could this point to the idea that the path to unity can not be found by building tall towers or forms of any kind to reach the heavily perspective of the OIC. You can’t get there by climbing up the external ladders of the physical world, you can only get there through looking deep within to the heart of your self.

The Tower of Babel

The story is found in Genesis 11 :1-9 , and appears in the King James Version as follows:

1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children built. 6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do; and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7 Goto, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

According to a mysterious Kabbalistic account, one third of the Tower builders were punished by being transformed into semi-demonic creatures and banished into three parallel dimensions, inhabited now by their descendants.Various traditions similar to that of the tower of Babel are found in Central America. One holds that Xelhua, one of the seven giants rescued from the deluge, built the Great Pyramid of Cholula in order to storm Heaven. The gods destroyed it with fire and confounded the language of the builders. The Dominican friar DiegoDuran (1537–1588) reported hearing this account from a hundred-year-old priest at Cholula, shortly after the conquest of Mexico. Another story, attributed by the native historian Don Ferdinand d’AlvaIxtilxochitl (c. 1565-1648) to the ancient Toltecs, states that after men had multiplied following a great deluge, they erected a tall zacuali or tower, to preserve themselves in the event of a second deluge. However, their languages were confounded and they went to separate parts of the earth. Still another story, attributed to the Tohono O’odham Indians, holds that Montezuma escaped a great flood, then became wicked and attempted to build a house reaching to heaven, but the Great Spirit destroyed it with thunderbolts.
